Sunday July 10, 2016, lingering aftershocks of the prior evening’s seismic performance rumble across the rolling prairie of Southern Wisconsin as another caravan of concert pilgrims file down verdant lanes of Big Bluestem towards an epic summertime Dead & Company encore communion at the outdoor Midwest Music Mecca: Alpine Valley Music Theatre.
Dead & Company’s John Mayer with PRS signature ‘Blue Eagle’ surging in full second set flight, attacks the floor mounted guitar accessory known as a ‘Wah’ pedal during a blistering rendition of ‘Viola Lee Blues’.
Musical mad science emerges during ‘Space’ as John Mayer finesses the chirps and squeals of “feedback” out of the deep chasm of an infinite resource of amplified sound; his growing enthusiasm for mid-performance experimentation, a hallmark of pioneering bands like the ‘Grateful Dead’, injected intangible elements into an already elevated environment detached from the rigid modern world, dissolving unwanted, manufactured arbitrary stratifications, leaving the adoring audience buoyant and softened in a stellar summer evening.
